Dr Shuaib Kauchali is a Paediatrician currently working with the National Department of Health as the Newborn, Child Health and Nutrition Specialist Advisor. He graduated as medical doctor from the University of Witwatersrand and completed his post-graduate training in Paediatrics at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He furthered his studies in the field of public health and epidemiology at Columbia University in the City of New York. He is a maternal and child health epidemiologist with special interest in implementation and improvement sciences. He works closely with the programme managers at national and provincial levels to translate “what we know works” into “how these interventions yield results and impact”. He has authored clinical guidelines to support clinicians in making good clinical decisions in order to improve quality of care and outcomes of mothers and children in South Africa. He has over 19 years’ experience working in the South African health system. He holds an honorary senior lecturer’s positon in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of KwaZulu-Natal and University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He has published over 25 peer-reviewed articles in both local and international journals, and is a contributing author in 4 published epidemiology books, two of which are used as prescribed textbooks in academic curricula. He is also involved in research and innovation in field of maternal and child health and nutrition in South Africa and other African countries.
